MAJESTIC NEW ZEALAND
Photography by Rob Suisted • Text by Liz Light
The forces of nature and the elements, and the raw beauty of
the terrain that they continue to sculpt, are the subject of
Majestic New Zealand. This remarkable collection of photographs
celebrates Rob Suisted’s long-standing affinity with the
wilderness areas of New Zealand, and brings his finest work
together into a portrait of four major themes in the landscape:
our statuesque mountains and volcanoes; stately rivers and lakes;
the ever-changing coast; and our fertile farmland.
Rob’s many years in the outdoors, camera in hand, coupled
with his tenacity in pursuing the perfect shot, have resulted
in an unparalleled vision of wild New Zealand in all its moods.
Bathed in a lead-silver gleam, a dolphin is frozen mid-leap
above the waves at Kaikoura; theatrical light from a bruised
sky plays on lonely Kime Hut on the Tararua Range; a blinding
gleam of orange flares behind the gritty indigo cascade of Franz
Josef Glacier as low sunlight catches the far peaks.
These are images to savour; they reflect the sublimely photogenic
qualities of the natural world, and they sound a powerful contemporary
note in the long-standing tradition of portraying wild New Zealand
through a lens.
ROB SUISTED has spent much of his life tramping and hunting
in New Zealand’s back country. Prior to taking up a career
in photography, Rob spent 12 years with the Department of Conservation
as the national marine mammal co-ordinator. He is a frequent
visitor to the subantarctic and polar regions where he has worked
as a professional guide, lecturer, researcher and photographer.
Based in Wellington, Rob runs the stock photo image library
Nature’s Pic Images (www.naturespic.com). He is the author
of several books published by New Holland, including New Zealand
Panorama, Scenic New Zealand, New Zealand Landmarks and Wellington’s
Top Spots.
Award-winning travel writer and photographer LIZ LIGHT is a
regular contributor to North & South, AA Directions, The
Herald and Herald on Sunday. In 20 years of photojournalism
Liz has travelled the world extensively, but it is New Zealand’s
mountains, sea and sky, clear air, wild winds and green hills
that keep her heart in her homeland.

"Rob Suisted is one of New
Zealand's premier wildlife and scenic photographers and his
latest book Majestic New Zealand (New Holland, RRP $59.99) confirms
his place among the elite.
This book is a portrait of four major
themes in the landscape; our statuesque mountains and volcanoes,
stately rivers and lakes, the ever-changing coast, and our fertile
farmland.
A collection of 144 pages of sublime
photos, Suisted's book is supplemented with quality text by
award winning travel writer and photographer Liz Light.
It makes a wonderful coffee table
addition for anglers, hunters, and, oh yes, even dairy farmers
- three groups, which above all, need to understand the majesty
of our environment and the need to take care of it."
